Our first beer, since 1980
Oerbier
- 9%
- Dark, top-fermented
- Refermented in the bottle
The very first beer of the brewery, officially since 1980. Dark from a blend of different malts and a boil of several hours, with a light, fresh sourness from the yeast and lactic bacteria.
Tasting notes
Aroma
Dark malt and a fresh, slightly sour touch.
Taste
Full and round, with a sourness that balances the sweetness of the malt.
Finish
Dry and lightly bitter.

Serving tip
Keep cool and dark in the cellar and pour at 12°C into the Oerbier glass or a wine glass.
Keeping
Legally good for one year after bottling, but Oerbier keeps evolving and can be cellared much longer.
Did you know...
- The prototype was brewed by two students in a copper washing boiler.
- The name stands for the original and the pure ("oer" means primal).
- Gravity 1078 and 9% alcohol, hopped only with Golding whole-cone hops from Poperinge.
- After a few years of ageing Oerbier takes on a wine-like character.
- The brewery still keeps samples of the very first brew, and they are still perfectly drinkable.
- "Nat en straf" (wet and strong) on the glasses is a warning about the 9%.
- The Oerbier figure holds a brewer's fork, the work, but looks at the glass of beer, the result.
- The label is inspired by the cave paintings of Altamira in Spain, about the oldest known artwork in the world. You see them again on the metal sign with the cave drawing.
